Advance Wars is set in Wars World. Wars World is divided into three collections of continents: Macro Land, Cosmo Land, and Omega Land. Each collection of continents is divvied up between four superpowers - Orange Star (a United States analog), Blue Moon (Russia analog), Green Earth (German analog), and Yellow Comet (Japanese Analog). Each has their own contingent of COs (7 for Orange Star, 4 each for Green Earth, Yellow Comet, and Blue Moon), each with distinct personalities and different relationships. The four nations are not historically belligerent; Blue Moon and Orange Star COs, for instance, have very close ties, and Sonja of Yellow Comet receives military training from an Orange Star Academy. But while they were not on bad terms, the general isolationism of each nation was eventually taken advantage of by Sturm, who, in its first invasion of Wars World, manipulated several of the nations into attacking each other. By the time of the third Black Hole Invasion, the four empires had established a good-faith alliance under the banner of the Allied Nations.
Black Hole is a mysterious superpower with an unknown origin. Their armies are often created through malevolent means, like raiding, or draining the earth of energy. Black Hole has had two leaders, Sturm and Von Bolt, although both have been defeated. Sturm's Lieutenant was Hawke, with three other COs under him. Von Bolt had three new COs, dubbed his Bolt Guard. Black Hole has no permanent land, but instead establishes hidden Bases from which to launch their attacks. Each time Black Hole is defeated, their hidden bases are destroyed, and they must find a new area to attack from.
The armed forces of the Allied Nations are commanded by high-ranking military leaders called Commanding Officers (COs). They account for heads of states, or just particularly talented officers. A significant number of Wars World COs are exceptionally young, and are considered prodigies.
Orange Star's Commander in Chief is Nell, a woman known for her amazing luck. She is a stern but friendly military leader. Andy, Max and Sami hail from Orange Star's Cosmo Land properties. Andy is a skilled mechanic and logistics officer, although he can seem dimwitted and naive at times. Sami is a tough and tumble infantry specialist, and excels at capturing enemy properties. She has a romantic attachment to Green Earth's Eagle. Max is a giant of a man, and a senor Orange Star CO. Blue Moon's Grit is a friendly rival, although there is an unspoken bitterness between them that may have something to do with Nell. Andy, Max and Sami commanded the Orange Star forces that drove back both of Sturm's two invasions.
In Omega Land lives Rachel, Nell's sister, and Jake, another up and coming CO. Rachel shares some of her sister's luck, but hedges her bets with coordinated air strikes. Jake is a hipster slang-talking tank enthusiast who excels in grasslands combat. Although later joined by Sami and Max, Rachel and Jake were the main CO's responsible for doing Orange Star's share of the fighting against Von Bolt.
Blue Moon is commanded by Olaf, a large belligerent bearded man. He used to be an Orange Star CO but for unknown reasons he returned to his homeland of Blue Moon. He specializes in cold weather warfare. Grit, born orange star and defected to Blue Moon, is Olaf's lieutenant. Grit is a marksman, and specializes in long-distance warfare. His easy-going and unconcerned attitude frequently irritates Olaf, although he can become quite serious when confronted with serious challenges. During Sturm's second attack, CO Colin joined the Blue Moon army. A generally unskilled and easily startled CO, he makes up for his inexperience with personal wealth. During Von Bolt's attack, Colin's sister Sasha joined the ranks of CO. Sasha shares Colin's affinity for wealth, although unlike Colin, who can convert his wealth into firepower, she can undermine the effectiveness of other COs.
Green Earth is the most isolationist of the four powers. Its four COs, Eagle, Drake, Jess and Javier are peers with no obvious hierarchy, although the rest of the COs seem content to let Eagle's bravado and conceit determine the plans. Eagle, an air force specialist, is great friends with Drake, a naval specialist. Drake's easy-going demeanor serves as a moderator for Eagle's hotheadedness. Eagle and Jess, the ground specialist CO who returned to Green Earth during Sturm's second invasion, have a tumultuous relationship. Javier, a modern-day knight, rejoined Green Earth during Von Bolt's invasion.
Kanbei is the emperor of Yellow Comet. He's an enthusiastic and dimwitted emperor who relies on his daughter Sonja to handle most of the complicated military matters like intelligence gathering and strategy. Still, Kanbei's troops are the hardest, strongest (and most expensive) troops you can get. During Sturm's second invasion, Kanbei's teacher, Sensei, came out of retirement to join the fight. A paratrooper specialist, Sensei has a legendary war record, although his advanced age has taken some toll on his memory. During Von Bolt's invasion, Grimm joined the Yellow Comet CO ranks. Grimm is a boisterous and heedless CO who charges his troops into combat with little thought given to caution.
Black Hole's first invasion was mostly a solo affair by Sturm, a strange mechanical creature obscured by a heavy cloak. It utilized cloning technology to create a fake Andy to attack Green Earth and Blue Moon, in order to cause enough chaos that Sturm's building army would go unnoticed. Sturm's attack on Blue Moon convinced Olaf to invade Orange Star. Nell sent her COs to rebuff Olaf's attack and invade Blue Moon to prevent further attack. Soon after, Eagle from Green Earth attacked Orange Star forces, also fooled by Sturm's ploy. Eagle contacted Sonja in Yellow Comet for aid, but Sonja was not convinced Orange Star would attack Green Earth unprovoked. Regardless, she engaged the Orange Star army in order to test the mettle of the Orange Star COs, and also to put her own pieces on the board, in an attempt to draw Sturm out of hiding. She continued to coordinate with Grit from Blue Moon in order to find out what Sturms plan was. She eventually brought Sturm out of hiding, but underestimated how much power he had accumulated. With the help of the other Orange Star Nations, Sturm was defeated.
In Sturm's second invasion, he utilized his own COs. His lieutenant Hawke was a powerful CO who could create storms of dark energy. Under Hawke was Adder, a slithery CO who specialized in speedy warfare. Lash was a genius child inventor, who's talent at strategy made her a natural rival to Sonja. Lash took psychopathic glee in destruction, and served as a dark mirror for Sonja to learn from. Still, Sonja found herself strangely attracted to Lash. Lash was the mind behind a number of powerful Black Hole Inventions, like Black Canons, Laser Canons and Neotanks. At the bottom of the totem poke was Flak, a gorilla-like CO who was powerful but clumsy.
Von Bolt took up the mantle of Black Hole once Sturm was deposed by Hawke. His Bolt Guard was led by Kindle, a dominating woman who specialized in urban warfare and fire. Jugger, a robot with a fighting style similar to Jugger, and Koal, a short military specialist with a style similar to Adder, made up Kindle's entourage. Von Bolt's strategy relied on a number of Black Crystals, invented by Lash, which sucked energy from the surrounding land to create his army. Late in the war, Hawke discovered that Von Bolt was planning to betry him, and defected with Lash to the Allied Nations. Once the Allied armies defeated von Bolt, Hawke used his powers to kill von Bolt, and used von Bolt's chair (which had been storing the stolen energy) to replenish the land.
Personality: Sonja is a Commanding Officer and Princess of Yellow Comet. She is a brilliant tactician and intelligence gathering specialist. She is hyper competent and studious, although she suffers from social anxiety, low self-esteem and bad luck. She is prone to looking at war as a game of strategy, and people as resources, although she has made some progress towards developing empathy and fostering positive personal relationships.
Sonja is guarded, and keeps her cards close to her chest; this is both because she is cautious and perhaps a bit paranoid when it comes to observations and plans, but it also means that if she is wrong, no one will be able to see how foolish she was. Sonja has a tremendous case of Imposter Syndrome, and is constantly afraid that all of her accomplishments and skills so far have been accidents, and that at any moment she'll be revealed as a fraud. Because of this she tends to make a lot of self-deprecating references and has trouble being assertive. This has gotten better in recent times, but she still struggles with it.
Sonja's imposter syndrome is at its worst when Sonja's mind is idle; during times of challenge and crisis, she is extremely competent and efficient. She can put a brilliant plan together at a moments notice, and its only when the plan has been made and put into action that her self-doubt starts to kick in. Sonja works best when working with someone that can recognize her patterns, and knows when to stand back and let her work, and when to step in to tell her to stop worrying about things.
Sonja is highly introverted, and has trouble making new friends. She clings tightly to the friends she does have, however. Her relationship with Grit goes way back to when she was a child. Grit did a lot of travelling before settling down in Green Earth, and has friends in lots of places. It was Grit pulling some strings that got Sonja enrolled in Orange Start Academy. Her knack of academics let her advance a year into Sami's class, despite a significant difference of age. Sami and Sonja did not have the best relationship at the beginning of the franchise; Sami thought her a spoiled brat - not inappropriate since Sonja was in the middle of attacking the Orange Star Army on a hunch. Cooperating through three different world wars helped break the ice of the relationship, and the two are on good terms now.
Sonja is constantly irritated by her father, but she loves him immensely. Kanbei is her rock. Her big, dumb rock. While Kanbei has little of intellectual value to contribute to Sonja, he had a great impact on her emotional growth. During a conflict with Adder in the second Black Hole invasion, Sonja's instinct was to abandon a collection of cities which had no strategic value to the war, and were being used by Adder as bait for a trap. Kanbei reminded her that the role of a leader is not to win wars, but to protect their citizens. She took the reprimand to heart, and managed to defeat Adder before he could destroy all the cities.
Sensei is a grandfather figure to Sonja. Sensei and Sonja can spend hours together in quiet silence, both enjoying each other's company. The two of them have an ongoing Shogi rivalry, and at least one game every time Sensei comes by the palace.
After Von Bolt's defeat, Sonja pushed for Lash to be tried for War Crimes. Most of the other CO's were liable to pardon Lash's past deeds because of her aid against Von Bolt. Sonja had an ally in Olaf, whose hometown was personally devastated by Lash in the second Black Hole invasion. A compromise was worked out, putting Lash on community service towards rebuilding the damage done to Omega Land in the wake of Von Bolt's invasion. Sonja, both out of a sense of obligation, and out of confused adolescent hormones, dedicated herself to overseeing Lash's sentence.
Appearance: Sonja is a young, slight girl of Yellow Comet (Japanese). She maintains a professional appearance, her hair braided into two ponytails, a perfectly pressed red military tunic and combat boots, thin framed elliptical glasses, a stern, appraising expression (unless you manage to upset her carefully curated poise, then you'll open the floodgates for whatever emotion she's been bottling up).
She wears a yellow locket that opens up to reveal a single comet-shaped fire opal stone. It is lined with elaborate gold etchings.
Abilities: While Sonja is trained in hand-to-hand combat and small arms, her strengths are in the war room. She is a brilliant strategist, and specializes in clandestine operations; spreading misinformation, deceiving enemies, gathering and predicting enemy plans and movements, appraising and neutralizing tactical advantages... etc. She is hyper observant and perpetually calculating.
Inventory: Smartphone, Nambu Pistol, 8+1 round internal magazine, 8 round backup magazine, pen
Suitability: As a military commander and trained soldier, Sonja will be an obvious asset to a darker, militarized plot. She is naturally suspicious but also open-minded, and will blend into the world quickly and efficiently.
Suite: Earth Sector, as it reminds Sonja of the quiet serenity and calming atmosphere of the expansive estate around her palace home. Preferably close to the metal sector, however, as she'll be commuting often to make use of the more advanced technology available.

This was the worst thing that could possibly have happened.
Well, Sonja supposed, maybe not the /absolute/ worst. There was the time that MacroSoft came out with their new operating system, Doors 64, and it wasn't optimized for the last generation of computer games, so that Sonja had to run everything in compatibility mode and there was no discernible improvement in performance over Doors 32. Then there was the time that a leak sprung in the library, and while the mansion staff were extremely expedient and managed to evacuate the room of books before a single one was wet, Sonja's exhaustive archiving system was ruined and she had to spend a week re-organizing them. Then there were those three world wars with all the civilian casualties, Sonja supposed. Maybe those meant inclusion higher up in the list, but Sonja didn't have time to contemplate the appropriate hierarchy of catastrophes. This was a /crisis/.
"What do you /mean/ you're getting rid of the wifi?!" Sonja asked her father.
"It's for your own safety," Emperor Kanbei said, curtly. Kanbei was a man of right angles and straight lines. It wasn't that he chose his words carefully, he rarely had extra words on hand.
"Father, if this is about the time in the kitchen..."
"...when the Steward informs me a boiling pot nearly fell upon you with your nose buried in that glowing toy," Kanbei finished.
"Tablet, Father," Sonja corrected. If he showed the least concern about learning the current trends in technology, these frequent battles wouldn't be necessary. And its not like anyone was hurt during that scene. Well besides the cook, who jumped in the way. "And I did send a get-well card to Renjiro-sama."
"AND the time you nearly fell into that open pit," Kanbei continued.
"That was hardly my fault, there was a lack of marking..."
"You walked through two rows of tape, passed countless signs, and also ignored the warnings of several construction workers."
Sonja tried to think back to the incident. She could vaguely recall some shouts and just assumed it was another training drill off in the distance. Shouting was hardly uncommon with the Mansion next to the military base. Really, it was hard for her to recall anything besides the careful positioning and situational awareness necessary to succeed in World of Tanks. "Well, I was in the middle of a deathmatch, what was I supposed to do?" Sonja asked.
Kanbei sighed. "The matter is already decided."
"But, but!" Sonja sputtered as her father walked back towards his office. Sonja scrambled to find something else, some new angle, some new argument that would undermine her father's argument. "But why the wifi?! Wouldn't it make more sense to take my phone away?"
Kanbei stopped, turned around, and marched back to Sonja. He unceremoniously plucked her phone out of her hand. "Yes, excellent idea, Sonja." He turned and began walking back to his office.
"Hoisted by my own petard," Sonja muttered.

This system is a rather intriguing one, I must admit. I am informed they are 'bio-mechanical', whatever that means. Sounds like something Lash would mumble while babbling about the various pseudo-techs going into her latest ridiculous inventions. I say 'pseudo-tech' despite the fact that all of her inventions actually work the way they are intended to work, so I suppose that's continuing to insist on that moniker is irrational stubbornness on my part, but the only one here to scold me on my lack of self-regulation for cognitive bias is me, and I have for the moment decided to suspend that particular brain function.
I've never been particularly amenable to sharing my inner thoughts with other people, and so it goes without saying that I am reluctant to share them with whatever passes for the entire population of this strange place. For now, this will serve as a personal diary. It should be reasonably secure given the encryption options the console insists are available. Note to self: contact resident computer expert to interrogate on the efficacy of said encryption algorithms. Also remember to inquire about connecting to this 'network' with my phone, given the lack of its ability to natively connect to any wireless networks that exist in this place, if such networks exist at all.
I actually wonder if it will be possible to charge my phone at all. Something to look into in that Metal sector, I suppose. Worst case scenario, my phone will be a very aesthetic light-weight brick within a few hours. I think I'll turn on the power saving mode.

Setting: Advance Wars is a collection of 4 games (only 3 of which are in the same canon) within the Gameboy Wars franchise. It is a turn-based strategy franchise, where the player builds and controls various units, which have strengths and weaknesses based on the Commanding Officer you choose to lead your army. In addition to stat modification, damage done by and to your units fills a CO Power meter, that when full, your CO can use to change the situation on the battlefield, based on the character. Thus, combats are equal parts military strategy, and a kind of dual of personalities. In the 3rd game of the franchise, Dual Strike, the ability to combine CO Powers between two different COs was introduced. Certain Tag Powers are more or less effective based on the relationships of the two COs. Technology levels in Wars World are abstract, with modern era military craft (stealth bombers) servicing alongside WWII style vehicles ( submarines, battleships) and supertech (flying megafortresses, laser canons, megatanks). World War II aesthetic is generally maintained with exceptions.Advance Wars is set in Wars World. Wars World is divided into three collections of continents: Macro Land, Cosmo Land, and Omega Land.
